This quaint little CITY OF FOUNTAINS in southern France is famed for its cathedrals and historic buildings and the whole city is steeped in history. As a result, tourists will be spoilt for choice while visiting Aix en Provence.
There are many beautiful attractions in this town which will leave you spellbound with their majestic grace and imposing architectures. Some of the most famous sites of attraction are listed below.
Cours Mirabeau
It is the main and widest thoroughfare in the picturesque town and is an avenue flanked by trees in double rows, adorned by fountains and lined with beautiful and stately private residences.
The town consists of 2 sections – the new town in the west and south while to the north lies the old town, redolent of a past harking back to the Renaissance period, Restoration period and Romantic and Victorian ages of yore.
You can take a look around the old town that is criss crossed by irregular but wide roads and dotted with those old mansions of bygone eras. It almost seems as if history has come alive before your awe struck eyes.
Les Deux Garcons
In Aix this is the most renowned brasserie and was erected in 1792. Its customer list boasts of names of legends like Ernest Hemingway, Zola and Cézanne.
Cathedrale Saint Sauveur
It lies to the north of the medieval section of the old town. Several architectural influences from the fifth to the seventeenth century have converged in the erection of this imposing and colossal structure but the most notable influences are those of the gothic style and the Roman style.
In fact the ground on which it now stands used to house a Roman basilica and forum former to the building of the cathedral. Rich use of walnut has been made to carve out the intricately designed doors.
